Introduction

Birdsong For Beginners May 2020

Introduction

The North Yorkshire Coast and Forests are blessed with ideal conditions for experiencing and learning birdsong. To really hear every note and bathe in this blissful sound you need two things; high-quality semi-natural habitats and peaceful tranquillity. In partnership with the National Trust, Yorkshire Coast Nature have designed two uniquely linked events. Two beginner’s guided walks followed by a more in-depth workshop aimed at learning new skills for beginners and the more experienced.

Birdsong for Beginners

These two guided walks are an ideal way to re-conect with nature, we will follow a spectacular route which takes in both ancient woodland and the rugged North Yorkshire Coast. Hayburn Wyke is only a short drive from the bustling seaside town of Scarborough but the place is distant and secluded enough to hold the silence critical for experiencing nature’s symphony.

We have timetabled both walks at a time of year which increases opportunities for hearing both resident birds such as Song Thrush alongside migrants from Africa and Europe such as Blackcap and Whitethroat. The evening slot also gives us a chance of hearing Owls at or around dusk at the end of the walk.

Each walk is free, funded via Natural England's Higher Level Stewardship environmental scheme, but must be booked in advance. Distance less than 1.5miles on easy to walk ground. Numbers are limited so we can keep the group relatively small to ensure a high-quality experience for everyone. Both walks are led by YCN Director and Ecologist Richard Baines and National Trust rangers.

Richard Baines PGdip MCIEEM

Company Director And Birding/Wildlife Guide

Richard’s love of birds and wildlife started at age nine when he watched wide eyed as a charm of European Goldfinch fed on a thistle within a few feet of him in the grounds of his primary school. The next day he was busy drawing the flock in his art class./tutors/2/richard-baines-pgdip-mcieem
