A Birding and Cetacean Safari on the Sea! 2024
These special longer boat trips will sail from the wonderful fishing village of Staithes. These trips will last up to five hours. For a shorter three hour Seabird and Whale trip CLICK HERE.
On our Yorkshire Coast Nature Seabird & Whale Trips in 2023 we saw Black Tern, large numbers of Arctic and Common Terns, two Sabines Gulls, Arctic Skuas, Great Skuas, Manx Shearwaters, Sooty Shearwaters, Balearic Shearwaters, Atlantic Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills, Fulmars, hundreds of diving Gannets, Great Northern Divers, Red-throated Divers, Common Scoters and much more including migrant song birds crossing the North Sea and even Peregrine Falcons and a local Barn Owl from the boat.
The Yorkshire coast, once famous for its whaling fleet which sailed from Whitby is now becoming famous for its whale watching!
In late summer Minke Whales appear, following the Mackerel shoals, these fantastic mammals are the most regularly seen large cetacean on our coast, watch the YCN video below from some up close whale action! Harbour Porpoise are with us throughout the year and seen on most of our trips. Bottle-nosed Dolphins are now being seen all year round on the coast in increasing numbers. In 2023 we even saw an Atlantic Flying Fish, Blue-fin Tuna and a Sunfish!
These special full day trips have been designed to allow the flexibility to target the best stretch of coastline depending on where the seabird and/or cetacean action is prior to the tour.
In 2023 we will run our trips from Staithes again with Sean Baxter as our skipper with 5 hours at sea.
Throughout the trip you will have a great opportunity to learn about field craft and identification from our local expert guides in a small friendly group environment. Each tour includes the boat trip and an expert YCN guide in a small group environment. The meeting point will be the harbour Staithes village in North Yorkshire. A meeting place map will be sent by email along with your booking details.

Access to the boat is by a short ladder from the harbour side
Payment must be made in advance of any booking. All bookings will be confirmed by email which will contain important details of your trip.

what a great day. I remember on the way up in the car saying it should be fun, but that (and I am ashamed to say this now!) minke whales weren’t the most exciting whales in the world. I take it all back. That was more fun than any whale watching trip I think I’ve been on.
