Fox Cubs
May is a good time of year to see foxes with their cubs. The first litters of young foxes are weaned and are beginning to explore the world outside their earths. They spend time play-fighting with the dog fox and with each other. Foxes are more likely to be seen during daylight hours in the countryside; urban and suburban foxes are generally crepuscular and nocturnal.
The diet is quite catholic, with rabbits, rodents, birds and birds’ eggs, invertebrates and fruit taken. Foxes also scavenge on rubbish and compost heaps. The cubs are fed by both parents. Sometimes foxes live in groups with several non-breeding females as well as one or two breeding vixens. The non-breeding vixens help care for the cubs. The cubs stay with their mother all through the summer months.
