Coastal Flowers on the Great White Cape

Flamborough Headland is an internationally important area for its landscape and wildlife. The marine area includes Europe’s biggest chalk reef, extending 6 km offshore, and is protected as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).  The high cliffs are designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) for their nesting seabird colonies and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for their geology and maritime wild flower communities. A distinctive flora is found owing to the chalk overlain with boulder clay. Above the cliffs, numerous small gullies have developed into scrub and woodland.

The cliff top grasslands are wonderful places to discover flowers such as Kidney Vetch, Sea Thrift, Grass of Parnassus, Marsh Orchid and smaller hidden gems such as Buckshorn Plantain. On this walk there will also be lots of opportunities to also enjoy the local Atlantic Puffins and other spectacular seabirds.
